The birthday girl was the first one up this morning: showering, making her bed, and having breakfast. The others followed, sleepily eating their cereal. Xavier immediately came in to our room where Angela was watching television with me and hugged her and said, “¡Feliz cumpleaños, hermanita!” Angela opened her presents: a jigsaw puzzle of Rockefeller Center, two books on myths and legends, and a travel book of Arequipa. We also included $40 US dollars. (She has shown an interest in makeup and getting her ears pierced.) For lunch we had fried chicken and green rice. Raúl came by for an hour to discuss tomorrow with us, and what we need to bring with us to the Embassy. We have sealed packages of their medical reports and x-rays that only the consulate can open. We are taking those along with their passports, our passports, other documents, and mucho dinero. We thought it would be wise to also take copies of our airline tickets for Sunday. Raúl said that if we present the tickets, the process could be expedited if there is a foreseen delay. Our appointment is in the morning, so hopefully if there is an issue, we can rectify it by the afternoon. This is the final thing we have to do before we can leave: receive their exit visas. The children and I relaxed and watched television, specifically a cartoon called Gato Cósmico, while Dave went out to print the airline reservations, get money (at various ATMs since there’s a daily limit at each machine) and pick up a red-tipped white rose for Angela. For dinner, we had tamales with peas and carrots. For dessert, we had Angela’s tres leches cake and special ice cream floats with crushed cookies prepared by Dave. Xavier is in bed now, listening to music, and the girls are finishing up with their showers since they’re not crazy about getting up at 6:00 to do so. Can you blame them? I know I’ve taken my shower tonight. And Angela didn’t mind a second one.
