School Days

You know how soup tastes better the second night after the flavors have had time to marry? Well, let's just say a little confidence, good attitude, and optimism married to produce a better second day of school!  (As Angela says, “Yippee!”)  After waiting in line at Madison, here comes Angela, finding me and beaming with a huge smile, as a Hispanic amiga walked with her to the car.  She made a friend!  Thank you, Jesus!  She said good-bye to her new friend and quickly produced her name and number scrawled on a piece of notebook paper.  She quickly told me about her day, shared her excitement for the two hours of homework she had, and gulped down a cold bottle of water I brought her.  Xavier soon followed to tell me his day was great, too! He told me about a cool science experiment they did in class.  It sounded like something demonstrated the actions of a volcanic eruption.  Lizet waited patiently for me as we waited in a very long line at Ranch Heights.  She was thrilled about her day, saying it was better than yesterday.  Three for three!  Hooray!  Xavier had no homework, with which I'm about to inquire.  I'm a bit concerned there's no homework for a 7th-grader, two days in a row. Lizet's homework consisted of a math worksheet about place value of whole numbers, and a spelling activity: coloring, cutting, and gluing spelling words and the matching pictures in her spelling spiral.  Angela's homework was an assignment from her math book on the basics of pre-algebra, a Spanish worksheet on numbers, and a take-home quiz over a film they watched on bacteria and viruses.  She showed me a library book she checked out - it's in Spanish, but in English it's called Hank the Cowdog.  After homework, they showered and are now watching their favorite program.
